Special Outreach Project with New York City's Department of Finance

Important information for IRS partners and government agencies and offices in New York City

The NYC Department of Finance and the IRS are trying to reach New York City residents who appear to be eligible for, but did not claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) on their 2008 federal returns. IRS already sent these individuals a letter, but they did not reply.

NYC will be sending second notices to more than 5,500 residents during February and we welcome your help in alerting clients to this mailing.

The letter will include instructions, worksheets and information on where to get help. Taxpayers who receive these letters may be eligible to receive up to $4,824 from the IRS, but they must reply and provide the requested information.

These residents may also be eligible for the State and/or City Earned Income Tax Credit for tax year 2008.   If New York State determines they qualify for this credit, they will contact the residents in March 2012. They do not have to do anything to claim the State and/or City Earned Income Tax Credit for tax year 2008.

How Can You Help?

Alert your clients, customers, or constituents about the mailing and encourage those who receive letters to reply and get the EITC they earned.
